Odessa University was founded in 1865 based on Richelieu Lyceum. It was New Russia University but after the Revolution it became Odessa State University. After another 'revolution' in 1991 it became Odessa National University. It is not clear what differs a national university from a state one though. Anyway, it is one of the best universities in the FSU, alma mater to many scientists. Many renowned people worked there. Memorial signs on the walls of the university do not list them all but the most prominent are Mendeleyev, Sechenov, Mechnikov, Filatov, Zabolotnyy, Gamov.
The building at 2 Dvoryanskaya Street is the main building of the university. The math department is located there as well as the administration. The chemical department is in the building behind. A little further along Pastera Street is located the physics department. Other departments are far from here, out of the downtown.
Cryogenic College is in the same street opposite the university.
The main building was built in 1852-1857 by architect A.Shashin.
