Odessa Russian Drama Theater was founded in 1874 when it was built by merchant A.Velikanov instead of a bread depot. It was built in a hurry as the town theater had burned down, and the new Opera House had to be built yet. Initially, the theater was called after the owner — Velikanov Theater. In 1875 F.Rafalovich bought the theater and gave it the present name.
World stars performed on its stage at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th one such as Sarah Bernhardt, Eleonora Duse, Vladimir Davydov, Maria Zankovetskaya, Panas Saxaganskiy, Mark Kropivnitskiy and others.
In 1910 the building was turned into a roller skating rink. It was a new craze in town. That is what it looked like:
However, it only lasted a year this way.
The building had been overhauled by 2007.
The adjacent building is also a theater — for kids and youth.
