Rafalovich’s House

Description

The Rafalovichs were a family of Odessa bankers and grain vendors. The yearly turnout of their bank reached 60,000,000 roubles in the 1840s. The bankers were famous for their honesty. It is believed that Alexandre Dumas used the staff of the French branch of this bank to create the character of Morrell, if not Rafalovich himself. Unfortunately, the bank became a victim to intrigues of the Finance Ministry officials in the 1890s.

The building was built in 1870 by architect F.Gonsiorovskiy. Later there was a bank there, then a shipping company. Now it is the public prosecutor’s office.

There was a fire in the building in 2006. The roof burned down. The building has been restored.
