The Passage is a hotel and a mall, an architectural masterpiece of the end of the 19th century located on the corner of Deribasovskaya and Preobrajenskaya Streets.
It was built in 1898-1899 for merchant M.Mendelevich. The architect was L.Vlodek. The sculptors were S.Milman and T.Fishel.
There was a fire in the new building in October 1901. Some sculptures were destroyed as well as the tower above the main entrance — they were never rebuilt.
That is the only building in Odessa, and most likely worldwide, that has a steam engine on the roof. It can be seen from Ostap Bender Square.
As a hotel, the Passage nowadays is not the number one choice. It badly needs repair, and the customer service is not great at all. On the other hand, the prices are low and the location is very good.
