The building had belonged to Prince D.Gagarin but was given to the city. From 1899 through 1903 the sittings of the Literature and Artistic Society were taking place here. The luxurious interiors were kept. They strike with unexpected combinations of styles: classicism, baroque, empire…
Odessa Literature Museum was founded in 1977. To a degree, it is also a local history museum. There are 20 halls and each of them reflects the air of the decade it is dedicated to.
There is a so called Sculpture Garden in the courtyard of the museum that features comic monuments to the protagonists of Odessa folklore. Some of them are nice, some are not so nice, but the Garden is worth seeing.
The palace was built from 1842 through 1850 by architect L.Otton.
