Presbyterian Church

Description

First presbyterians arrived in Odessa from Europe. The Russian government invited immigrants from everywhere. At first they joined the Lutherans and had public worship at their church. In 1842 the communities split and the Reformats rented a place for prayers.

In 1850 Emperor Nikolay I gave a good location to the community at the corner of Preobrajenskaya and Hersonskaya Streets. In 1851 a prayer house was built. There was not enough funds to built a church but space was left for it. The building of the church was finally laid in 1895. The project belonged to architect V.Shreter from St.Petersburg. Engineer H.Skveder built the church under the supervision of architect A.Bernardazzi. The building was finished and consecrated in 1900.

The church was closed down in the USSR. The building was remodeled and turned into a puppet theater. But in 1998 it was returned to the Reformat Presbyterian community by a court ruling.
