Initially, it was a parade-ground. Later, the city authorities decided to set up a mall there with stores, cafes and entertainment houses. Now it is a public garden with some cafes, a fountain and sculptures.
The commies loved to rename places (instead of building new ones), and this square did not escape that. It was renamed to Charles Darwin Square, but few locals would tell you where that square was but everybody knew Palais Royal.
One of the sights in Palais Royal is a copy of the Eros And Psyche — ancient Greek statue of the 2nd century B.C. that was put here in 1900.
