The location of modern Odessa saw early Greek settlements back in the 6th century BC. There were more than one. Artefacts were found during the construction of the first Odessa buildings. They belonged to different eras. It is not clear why the ancient town suddenly ceased to exist in the 3rd century BC. According to ancient authors, the town was called Istrian and had a harbor.
In 2008 the boulevard was repaired, and the workers discovered some artefacts. Archeologists were called in. They found the basement of a house, ritual pits with the remains of animals that had been sacrificed, etc. A glass roof was instaled and now everyone can see the findings directly at the site.
