It is an unusual monument to fictional characters. Two boys are riding a board. They are Petya and Gavrik, the main characters of a novel by Odessa author V.Katayev, The Lonely White Sail. The writer (1897-1986) lived in Odessa a century ago and as a boy ran around these streets. It is an autobiographical novel that gives a good idea of old Odessa even though it was written under the Communist rule.
This was one of the last monuments opened in Odessa in the Soviet time. It was opened in 1988. The sculptor was N.Stepanov. He talked to the writer, showed him his sketches and models, and Mr. Katayev approved them.
